Wish you all a happy new year. What better way to start the new year than a meet where we eat! That’s something that all of us have been looking forward to & some of us have been planning for long. So let’s have another round of history, culture, architecture, photography, chai, gupshup, fun and most importantly FOOD! Another highlight of this meet is the “when amit met senthil” factor. #DBM33 – Sunday Dutch breakfast meet in Gurgaon

This is a meet after a long gap (a season)! But we are back and would be having frequent meets now that the weather has improved and allows us to venture outside without getting frozen or roasted. After the rather enlightening & interesting walkathon from India Gate to Rashtrapati Bhawan (DBM32), we now plan to meet at Gurgaon for a Dutch breakfast! The weather is just right and we also get to see how the famous Dutch Stroopwafel cookies are made!

Here are the details.

Date : 18th July’10 (Sunday)
Time : 9am-12pm
Venue : Bagel’s Cafe, D-140, Shopping Mall, Arjun Marg, DLF Phase I, Gurgaon. The venue is air conditioned, has parking and has free wi-fi as well.

The Delhi Bloggers community completes 6 years!

It’s been another glorious year in the history of this group of Delhi’s bloggers! It seems like just yesterday when we were celebrating the 5th year anniversary of our group which is still growing, spreading further and hopefully adding value to the lives of all who are a part of it! . From my end, it sure has been one hell of an experience which has provided me not just an opportunity to interact with so many bloggers and indulge in so many events/activities with them, but has also directed me towards a new profession altogether!

The Delhi Bloggers Bloc completes 6 years on 13th Jan! (It was created after the first ever Delhi Bloggers meet on 13th Jan 2004).

In the past year we have organised some spectacular meets like India’s first ever WordPress camp where Matt Mullenweg, the founder of WordPress & Om Malik, the founder of the Gigaom network, joined us along with a lot of bloggers from all remote corners for India! This was the first such pan India bloggers/social media enthusiasts event to be organised. It was also the first such event where global attention was upon what was happening in the Indian capital, thanks to it being a WordPress Camp being fairly popular events. Such was the excitement generated during this meet that the hashtag of our event (#wci) top trended for the entire 2 days that the event was held for!

Another wonderful meet organised in the past year was the first ever meetup with a politician in India – and who else but the savviest one – a meet with Dr. Shashi Tharoor himself! It wouldn’t be entirely incorrect to state that the entire country’s twitterati and bloggerati was watching our event hashtag to see what was transpiring in this one of a kind unique interaction between a politician & users of new media.

Apart from these exciting events, we of course also had a lot of the regular fun meets, heritage walks, photography walks, food meets/tw-eatups.

A big thanks to everyone who’s been a part of this journey whether it was by helping organise meets, participating in meets or even being a silent spectator of the goings on.

#DBM32 – walkathon from India gate to Rashtrapati Bhawan

After the rather sumptuous & also culturally rich meet at Jama Masjid/Chandni Chowk (DBM31), we now plan to meet at India Gate for a walkathon from India Gate to the Rashtrapati Bhawan. The weather is just right and we explore the historical and architectural aspects on the way.

We have two experts with us, who could guide us along on the short walk in that area. Mani with a keen interest in history and Pashim Tewari (visiting faculty at School of planning and architecture) will share some architectural aspects of the Lutyens Delhi. However it is also recommended to read up a bit about India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhawan, for this meet.

Here are the details.

Date : 15th Nov’09 (Sunday)
Time : 3pm-5pm
Venue : meeting point is at India Gate (not the lawns but the gate)
Agenda - Meet at India gate at 3pm, sit in lawns till 4pm and get to know each other. After this we walk from India Gate towards Rashtrapati bhawan and go as far as they let us. We explore the area, read up on it before hand and get guidance from experts – Mani & Pashim (history & architecture perspective respectively). After the walk it is upto the attendees if they want to go to some nearest coffee place (which would be in CP).

#DBM31 – ramzaan special – tentative agenda

Dear all,

We now have another bunch of people joining us for this meet – EOID gang (Eating out in Delhi). Their meet and our meet coincides very much and this just adds to the merriment. They are of course experts in “eating out in delhi”.

Please note that we are PREPONING the time of the meet by half hour, so that we move for our jaunt at *precisely* 5:45pm.

Here’s the tentative action plan for the day:

1. meet at chawri bazaar exit of Chawri bazar metro station at 5:30pm this saturday. (please note there is a chandni chowk station as well & chawri bazaar metro station is different, so make sure you know the correct stop)

2. We move from there at sharp 5:45pm, to head straight to the Jama Masjid to witness the daily breaking of the fast. We all reach Jama masjid by 6 pm (walking or thru rickshaw etc)

3. Iftar on Saturday is around 6:35pm so this is the correct timing to be there. People are advised to wear clothes that keep their arms and legs covered. In addition, women should bring a scarf/chunni/etc to cover their heads. Some of us should also bring a bedsheet/chattai to spread out on the floor at the Masjid so we can relax and break the fast with everyone else. If there are ppl fasting they can get fruits/dates/water to break their fast with. If you are not fasting, even then you are welcome to do the same.

Those carrying a camera might be charged an entry fee at the gates. The purpose of going inside JM is not only to observe a ritual or to click pics, but also to interact amongst ourselves, because practically there wouldnt be any other place where a big group can sit and interact within members.

4. Post JM we head out at 7:15pm, to chawri bazaar to taste some delicacies. Some of us would be interested in non-veg, some in veg.. people are free to pursue their tastes separately also , and possibly meet at a common point later like sitaram bazaar (which sells some unique kulfi)

This aspect of our meet can be dynamic based on the groups preferences at that point.

After the wonderful and EXCLUSIVE meet with Dr. Shashi Tharoor (DBM30) at “The Attic” in CP, we now look forward to the Ramzaan Eat Meet/Tweat Up – something that all of us have been looking forward to & some of us have been planning for this coming weekend. We are guilty of not having shared more details yet, of the meet with Dr. Shashi Tharoor before we announced another meet, but we’ll definitely be back with those details as well, very soon. DBB presents #DBM 29 – a meet for Delhi’s bloggerati and twitterati!

It’s been quite a while since we last met! India’s first WordCamp was sure the coolest event we have ever organised (and at the risk of sounding pompous) or that India’s online space has seen for that matter going by the superb feedback we received! . We’ll be updating this blog with the details of that event soon for those who missed out on it.

We understand junta has been revving up since quite some time to have a meet but we have been in the recuperation mode after WordCamp India . But not anymore! It’s time for the next meet (and many more to come) – DBM#29 – which is a Delhi tweetup as well as a bloggers meet. All twitterati and blogerati are invited!

What : get acquainted with each other. Demystify twitter for those who dont know it yet. DBM#28 – 5 year anniversary special – a Food Meet/Tweat Up

After the wonderful heritage walk we had (DBM27) at the Jamali Kamali Masjid, we now look forward to the Eat Meet/Tweat Up – something that all of us have been looking forward to. On the occasion of the group’s 5th year anniversary, we are doing a series of meets and this is the 2nd one in that series. DBM#27 – 5 year anniversary special – a heritage walk

After the wonderful heritage walk we had (DBM26) some weeks back, the group was very keen to have another one very soon. On the occasion of the group’s 5th year anniversary, we are doing a series of meets and what better way than plan another heritage walk and have another round of history, culture, architecture, photography, chai, gupshup, winter sun and fun!

Who should attend?

Anyone who has an active interest in heritage, history, culture, architecture, photography and in documenting it through blogs, tweets, flickr pictures, podcasts or in any other way. Or anyone who has an interest in meeting the oldest bloggers group in Delhi and having some fun along the way .

The plan is to read up on these areas and have an exchange of information at the venue itself. We are trying to get some experts to guide us around the walk, but we can always self-educate. We meet, explore, click pictures and then of course grab grub – the integral part of any meet.

The Delhi Bloggers community completes 5 years today!

It’s a great feeling to be able to see a network one started 5 years back, still growing, spreading further and hopefully adding some value in the lives of all who are a part of it! . It sure has added a lot to mine and provided me an opportunity to interact with so many bloggers and indulge in so many activities with them.

The Delhi Bloggers Bloc completes 5 years on 13th Jan! (It was created after the first ever Delhi Bloggers meet on 13th Jan 2004).

We would love your suggestions on what all you want to do on this occasion (both online/offline) .

Here’s what we are planning – a month long series of activites

So starting this week onwards, we can have

1. A heritage walk (during the last meet the group wanted to do another one pretty quick) – proposed location – Nizammudin dargah, hear the qawwalis too, proposed date – 18th Jan (sunday)

2. Call it what u want, An Eat Meet, a “tw-eat up” or a foodie meet - you get the idea – we all go and gorge on FOOD - proposed location – chandni chowk, proposed date -1st feb (sunday)

3. Both above locations double up as photography walks too.

4. Someone suggested a nature walk at Yamuna Bio diversity park. One needs binocs for such a thing and some knowledge on ornithology as well . But if all are game, we can surely visit one of the areas in NCR where we catch up with nature – proposed location yamuna bio-diversity park, delhi zoo, Sultanpur bird sanctuary (near gurgaon)

5. And the grand finale – we are organising India’s first wordpress camp (called wordcamp) on feb 21st, feb 22nd. Matt Mulenwag, the founder ofwordpress has kindly agreed to grace us with his presence for the event . I am quite excited about this event and we would definitely need help from all of you to make it a grand success.

Suggestions are welcome so that we can quickly finalise the activities with their corresponding coordinators/ volunteers. Feel free to invite your other blogger/flickr/ twitter friends to these events.

DBB presents – DBM 26 – the heritage walk!

Everyone in the group has expressed a lot of interest for a long due heritage walk. Before the year ends, we would all like to meet and what better way than spending some time together soaking some winter sun and having a hot steaming cuppa together!

We can safely say that this is a long awaited meet – DBM 26!

DBM#25- a meet for delhi bloggers and microbloggers – a roundup

On 20th, Delhi witnessed its second twitter meet. Unlike the previous twitter meet, which was held in a cafe, this meet was sponsored by Incube Business centre. The meet started at 5pm. I got there by about 5:20pm thanks to the traffic. There were already some twitter enthusiasts who had introduced themselves to each other. Kumar Rahul was fully prepared with a laptop, ready to just start. We had another round of introductions during which we noted down the twitter id’s or mail id’s (of those who were not on twitter). During the intro round, Gautam Ghosh walked in and I quickly put the onus of kickstarting a session, onto him. Gautam talked about what twitter really meant for him. Conversations are what matter – at the end of the day, whichever platform you are on.Also crossposted here.

This was followed by a talk on kwippy.com by co-founder – Mayank dhingra, who also got caught in the traffic and arrived midway Gautam’s session.

By the time this session ended, we had already overshot a lot of time and quickly rushed to the refreshment part of our agenda.

Some tasty grub later, we came back in, to discuss the TOI case of plagiarism that I had faced. I was also carrying the copy of What’s hot with the corrigendum in it. Everyone seemed amused by the whole sequence of events. This was followed by a talk on “Bill of rights” by Kumar Rahul. This is a collection of points he plans to take up with @scobleizer.

We followed this with another round of some rather tasty sandwiches, samosas, tea & coffee. Just before we all were leaving, someone suggested we click a group picture, so we did with about 1/4th of the participants. All pictures would be uploaded soon and a post shall be here to keep you all updated. Tune into the rss feed of this blog .

Social Media & Blog camp! – a description

I have been organising Delhi Blogger Meets and events around Delhi Bloggers, since many years now. Recently we did something quite differently. On 7th June’08, we managed to present a Social Media & blog camp for Delhi Bloggers Bloc – an online community of Delhi Bloggers. Blogging has come a long way and is one of the most powerful tools that are a part of “Social Media”. This post has been long pending since I was in the process of changing jobs during that time, and was also waiting for some of the speakers to provide me with their presentations. I still haven’t received all, but well, better late than never!

The DBB – social media and blog camp was held at Indiatimes, Gurgaon office on 7th June’08. The event venue, meal and snacks were sponsored by Indiatimes. We also had IBM & WordPress as promoters for this event. Tyroo ads was the online partner as well. There was another corporate – a leading telecom giant – who was going to be one of the sponsors but backed out at the last moment. All part of the game I guess! The event tags and pens were sponsored by Puneet of Superblogsecrets.com. Getting sponsorship was a learning experience in designing pitches and preparing concept notes. The giveaways were uber cool and perhaps one of the most pleasant surprises of the day. Indiatimes provided t-shirts and stationery. IBM provided sippers. WordPress provided some rather cute badges (which got lapped up very very quickly & I kept getting requests for them much later as well) and stickers. Indiatimes also had a lucky draw and provided all speakers as well as the lucky winners – a USB watch! How cool is that? A watch which also doubles up as a USB device.

We had released only 100 passes for this event and later had to extend them because of the high demand! I had to refuse some ppl who wanted to attend since we were already overflowing capacity. I had also been getting a lot of calls from people who wanted to speak at this event on a lot of interesting topics. However, we had to limit that too, much as we didnt like it! We had planned several talks by eminent personalities on relevant topics. The topics touched on web2.0 aspects in a lot of spheres.

The camp kicked off with N Madhavan’s talk on taxonomy of blogs – a way for newbies to identify where they are in this blogosphere. Madhavan is a senior journalist with HT with an active interest in New Media.

This was followed by a web 2.0 – travel industry perspective. Digital Marketing for the Travel Industry in the Web 2.0. Scenario was presented by Nirat Bhatnagar, co-founder of chahiye.info.

Rajesh Lalwani of blogworks.in presented two back to back sessions. Both were very well received. The first was Where are you going in your social media car? This session presented a perspective on social media – we talk so much about it but are we getting there yet? This was followed by an excellent case study Impact of social media on purchase – derived from personal expriences on purchase.

The next session was by Shyam Somanadh, Principal Architect, Network18 (Web18) who presented Participatory Media: The view from inside. He talked about some of the things that the Web18 team had done wrt social media on their own website. This was the time I learnt that “participatory” media is yet another term for social media.

This was followed by a quick talk on Twitter by Sanjukta Basu where she discussed twitter and also used it for a live demo.

We had to omit a rather interesting session on Social media – Socio cultural implications and trends – by Manav Deep Mianwal, Head Brand & Media, Airtel enterprise services since he couldnt be there due to personal reasons. We were running short of time, so this provided some getting back on track.

We quickly jumped to the session on Social media in the corporate context – presented by Natraj Akella, Brand strategy & marketing, IBM.
After this we had worked up quite an appetite and moved on to a great sumptuous lunch. The whole place was jampacked and people could be seen enjoying and of course networking.
After lunch we started with Bringing “Social” to software presented by Manish Dhingra, founder Tekriti software. This session talked about how to incoporate that social context in software.

This was followed by a “light” session – Exploiting the Internet – Riding somebody else’s Success by Jamshed V Rajan, Director products, Ibibo web pvt limited. Jammy is known for his humour blog – ouchmytoe.com and also showed us a rather interesting video on Social Media.

Then came a very debated session Protecting “New” in New Media by Prashant Singh. It presented various insights into our psyche about social media. Nikhil of Medianama.com, actually willingly gave up his session so that discussion around this topic could go on. He later presented his own take on the same topic.

A much needed session on Law & Technology was well presented by Gurpreet Singh, Internet Attorney. He discussed copyrights and trademarks.

This was followed by an interactive session on What makes mobile social networks successful? This was presented by Ekta Rohra Jafri.

The last session of the day was one that a lot of people had been waiting for. The monetary aspect of blogging (how could we not include that? ).
Blogging Superstars : How to monetize a blog effectively? was conducted by Mohit Maheshewari, Co-founder Tonic Tag Media Pvt Ltd.

This event was quite well received by both the audience as well as those who wanted to present something. It is amazing to see how social media creeps into everything – be it the corporate world, purchase, travel, traditional media etc. There were a lot of other interesting topics that I wanted to have during our session. However due to limited time we could not. I would have also personally liked to do an elaborate session on photography and how it is benefitting due to social media. Due to lack of time with me as well as a well known photographer I had approached, we could not conduct this one. Next time surely!

The participants were a very intresting mix with people from internet companies, startups, national TV channels, IT personnel, civil society, lawyers, brand managers, social workers, mainstream newspapers etc. The news about this event had reached a lot of people. A surprise entrant was Pavan Duggal, the well known lawyer who also attended this event, having heard of it from a friend.

The day ended with a closing thanks by me, followed by lucky draw and surveys/feedbacks.
It was a fruitful day full of compliments for the enormous effort behind it. All this would not have been possible without Garima and Sanjay – my co-organisers for the event. Garima worked from the Indiatimes end. Sanjay and I, designed pitches, made powerplay presentations, posters, tags, schedules, invites, concept notes etc.
